March 5: When Letting Go Feels Impossible
š Matthew 19:21 ā āJesus said to him, āIf you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.āā
The Conversation That Changed Everything
He came running. You could see the desperation in his eyes, hear it in his breathless voice.
š£ļø āTeacher, what good thing must I do to have eternal life?ā
This wasnāt a casual question. It was the kind of question you ask when youāve spent too many sleepless nights wrestling with something deep inside you.
This young man had everythingāwealth, status, influence. Yet something still felt incomplete.
And Jesus, in that way He always did, saw straight into his heart.
š āSell everything,ā He said. āGive it to the poor. Then come, follow Me.ā
The words must have hit like a thunderclap. Give up everything?
The young man looked down, hands curling into fists. He had come searching for an answerābut not this one. Not the one that asked for his security, his comfort, his identity.
š So, with a heavy heart, he walked away.
Have You Ever Been There?
How many of us have stood in that same place?
ā Maybe we donāt have great wealth, but we all have something weāre afraid to release.
ā We come to Jesus hoping for an easy answerāonly to realize that following Him means surrendering more than we expected.
š¬ Engagement Moment
Have you ever felt God asking you to let go of something that felt impossible to release? Letās talk about it in the comments. Your story may encourage someone else!
Whatās Too Precious to Surrender?
Letās be honestāwe all have something we donāt want to let go of.
Maybe itās money.
Maybe itās something deeperāa relationship, a dream, control over your future.
We tell ourselves:
š āJesus can have my Sundays, my prayers, my devotionābut this one thing? Iād rather keep.ā
Because what if letting go means losing ourselves?
But hereās the real question:
š Is what youāre holding onto actually holding onto you?
The truth?
Surrender isnāt just about sacrificeāitās about trust.
Jesus wasnāt trying to take something from the young manāHe was trying to free him.
ā”ļø Free him from the illusion that wealth could fulfill him.
ā”ļø Free him to experience the radical, all-consuming joy of walking with God.
Imagine if he had said yes.
Imagine him stepping into a life of freedom, adventure, and faith instead of walking away in sorrow.
That same invitation is open to us.
š” Surrender isnāt just about giving something up. Itās about gaining something greater.
āļø Peace.
āļø Purpose.
āļø A deeper relationship with Christ.
A Trade Worth Making
Peter, James, and John left their fishing nets on the shore.
Matthew walked away from his tax collectorās booth.
Again and again, Jesus invited people to trade the temporary for the eternal.
And those who said yes?
⨠They gained more than they ever imagined.
But letās talk about what surrender looks like in real life.
Itās not always a dramatic, once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Sometimes, surrender is a daily choice.
Itās waking up every morning and saying:
ā”ļø āJesus, I trust You more than my plans.ā
I think of a friend who once told me, with tears in her eyes, about giving up a dream she had clung to for years.
š āIt was painfulāgut-wrenching, even.ā
But looking back, she saw the beauty in it.
š¤ āI didnāt lose myself,ā she said. āI found Jesus in a way I never had before.ā
Surrender is not a lossāitās an exchange.
When we let go, weāre not left empty-handed.
š God fills the space with something far greaterāmore of Himself.
What Are You Clinging To?
What is Jesus gently asking you to lay down so you can take His hand instead?
Maybe itās time to stop holding back.
Maybe itās time to trust that whatever we release, God will replace with something infinitely betterāmore of Himself.
⨠Heās calling. Will you follow? āØ
