May 15| Finding Sacredness in Ordinary Spaces: Rediscovering God's Presence in Everyday Life
In our fast-paced world of constant notifications and packed schedules, we've become spiritual sleepwalkers. We move through life with our heads down, missing the divine encounters happening all around us. What if I told you that the sacred isn't just found in church sanctuaries or mountain retreats, but right where you stand? That the ordinary spaces of your life—your kitchen, your office cubicle, even a hospital waiting room—might actually be holy ground?
This isn't just poetic language. It's a revolutionary truth rooted in scripture and experienced by those who've learned to see with spiritual eyes. Let's explore how we can rediscover the sacredness in ordinary spaces and awaken to God's presence in our everyday lives.
The Hospital Courtyard: A Glimpse of Eden
Imagine this scenario: You've been sitting in a hospital waiting room for six hours. The fluorescent lights hum overhead while a muted talk show plays in the corner. Your father is in surgery, and there have been no updates. Your phone buzzes constantly with work demands and family members wanting information. The weight of responsibilities crushes down alongside your worry.
Needing air, you step outside into a small courtyard between hospital wings. It's nothing special—a concrete bench, a few hardy plants, pigeons pecking at crumbs. Then, something unexpected happens. A shaft of evening sunlight breaks through, illuminating a single purple wildflower pushing through a crack in the pavement. Its delicate petals catch the light, vibrant against the gray concrete.
Something shifts in your chest. For one suspended moment, this flower becomes the most beautiful thing you've ever seen—evidence of life's persistence in the unlikeliest places. An overwhelming sense of presence washes over you. In this unremarkable hospital courtyard, surrounded by stress and fear, you suddenly feel less alone—as if someone has gently placed a hand on your shoulder and whispered, "I am here. Even here."
This isn't just an emotional response to beauty or a psychological coping mechanism. This encounter touches something primal in our spiritual DNA—an echo of Eden, where communion with God in ordinary spaces was our natural state.
Jacob's Revelation: The Wilderness Becomes a Gateway
This experience has biblical precedent. Consider Jacob in Genesis 28, stopping for the night in an unremarkable wilderness location with a stone for his pillow. Nothing suggests sacredness until he dreams of a stairway to heaven with angels ascending and descending.
Upon waking, Jacob's perception transforms: "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it... How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven."
What appeared to be just another patch of wilderness was, in reality, holy ground. The extraordinary wasn't somewhere else—it was right where he stood, unrecognized until his eyes opened.
Our Compartmentalized Spirituality
Most of us have compartmentalized our spirituality. We've relegated God to sanctuaries and set-aside times, while moving through our weekdays in spiritual sleepwalking. We've created an artificial divide between the sacred and the secular that Scripture never intended.
The Psalmist wrote, "One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple." (Psalm 27:4)
This wasn't about literal residence in the temple but a consciousness of living continually in God's presence. Later, Paul would remind the Athenians that God "does not live in temples made by human hands" and that "in him we live and move and have our being." (Acts 17:24, 28)
The revolutionary truth is that all creation serves as God's temple. The earth itself is "the LORD's, and everything in it" (Psalm 24:1). The God who manifested between golden cherubim is equally present in hospital courtyards, laundry rooms, and office cubicles.
Finding Sacred Signs in Ordinary Places
That wildflower breaking through pavement isn't just metaphorical—it's actually revealing God's character, persistence, and beauty if we have eyes to see. Creation itself speaks of its Creator, not just in grand canyons and spectacular sunsets, but in the most humble displays of life and beauty.
Your moment in that hospital courtyard wasn't mere emotional relief but a momentary lifting of the veil between heaven and earth, revealing what's always true: the sacred saturates the ordinary. That concrete space was, in Jacob's words, "the house of God and the gate of heaven."
This awareness transforms everything. The waiting room becomes sacred ground where divine comfort awaits discovery. The daily commute becomes an opportunity for communion. The kitchen sink can be as holy as a cathedral altar when we're fully present to the God who meets us there.
Practical Ways to Recognize Sacred Spaces
How do we cultivate this awareness in our daily lives? Here are three practical approaches:
1. Create Small Sabbaths Throughout Your Day
You don't need a full day to honor the sacred. Try creating 30-second pauses throughout your day—brief moments to breathe deeply and acknowledge God's presence right where you are. These mini-sabbaths can transform your awareness and interrupt the spiritual sleepwalking that characterizes many of our days.
Whether you're at your desk, in your car, or washing dishes, simply pause and whisper, "God, you are here with me, even now." This simple practice can begin to retrain your spiritual senses to recognize divine presence in ordinary moments.
2. Engage Your Senses as Doorways to the Sacred
Our physical senses weren't given just for practical survival—they can become thresholds into awareness of God's presence. The smell of rain on dry ground, the texture of your child's hand in yours, the taste of freshly baked bread—each can become a portal into gratitude and awareness.
Try this experiment: Choose one sense each day to focus on as a sacred doorway. Today might be touch—notice textures, temperatures, and physical connections. Tomorrow might be hearing—listen for birds, music, or the voices of loved ones as divine gifts.
3. Develop "Divine Tracking"
Wildlife trackers develop the ability to notice subtle signs of an animal's passage—a bent twig, a tuft of fur, a particular pattern of footprints. Similarly, we can develop "divine tracking" skills—actively looking for evidence of God's character in everyday encounters.
Where do you see God's creativity, persistence, beauty, or love manifesting in your ordinary day? That colleague who shows unexpected kindness, the way light filters through leaves, the synchronicity that couldn't be mere coincidence—all might be signs of divine presence in your everyday world.
The Eden Memory: Returning to Our Natural State
This awareness of God's presence in ordinary spaces isn't a new spiritual technique—it's actually a return to our original design. In Eden, Adam and God walked together "in the cool of the day." There were no temple walls, no separation between sacred and secular. All ground was holy ground because God was present.
We carry this "Eden memory" in our spiritual DNA—a faint recollection of what it means to live in continuous communion with God, not just in designated sacred spaces or times, but in every moment and place.
A Prayer for Awakened Awareness
Creator God, forgive us for walking blindly through the cathedrals of everyday life that You've created. Open our spiritual eyes to recognize Your presence in seemingly mundane moments. Transform our homes, workplaces, and communities into temples of awareness where we continuously recognize that in You, we live and move and have our being. Awaken in us again the Eden-memory of walking with You in the cool of the day, in every space we inhabit. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Your Bethel Is Waiting
Jacob named his wilderness encounter spot "Bethel"—House of God. Where might your Bethel be? Perhaps it's your backyard, your workplace, the local coffee shop, or even that hospital courtyard.
The invitation is clear: open your eyes to the sacred that saturates your ordinary spaces. God's presence isn't something we have to chase or earn or find in special locations—it's the reality we already live within, like fish in water. Our job is simply to notice, to remember, and to respond with reverence and joy.
What ordinary space in your life might God be inviting you to recognize as sacred ground today?
